You have made a gorgeous machine and its probably my favorite mod out there. I have 2 K40’s, and i have been hesitant to expand the bed because i really don’t know much about laser wavelengths and all of that. Does extending the bed size affect the focus and cut of the laser? Like i am very interested in turning my old CNC bed into the cutter bed as it is an 8 foot by 4 foot bed and has all of the stepper motors and drivers, but i haven’t gutted one of my K40s yet because i don’t know if i have to modify the reflectors etc. Do you know if this will work or not? Thanks mate and again, that is one gorgeous machine you made.
From an optical point of view the bed size has no effect on the quality of the cut. The laser rays travel parallel to each other (so not divergent as a lamp would do) so in theory the distance the beam travels does not matter. Mechanically there is no modification needed specifically to that effect, but as the distance becomes greater, more careful mirror alignment is needed. Basically, if your mirror alignment is 0.1° off, it won’t be off-target as much on 20cm of travel as it would be on 100cm of travel. But that’ stating the obvious.
