Introducing: the LAYZOR
LAYZOR is a budget friendly rebuild of the popular Chinese K40 laser cutter that is so ubiquitous on eBay.
While the K40 is – value-for-money – not a bad deal, there’s obviously tons of room for improvement. Being very limited in working area, user convenience and safety features, the usual upgrades still felt lacking to me, so I bit the bullet and imagined a complete rebuild. Re-using as many stock parts as possible while upgrading the ones that did need replacing. I settled on a generous 600 x 400 mm size for the working area, and worked out my additional project goals from there. All while keeping the total conversion cost down to an absolute minimum (+/- €500).
I started designing the LAYZOR in January 2018. Dozens of hours and equally as many revisions later I finally finished the build by the end of May 2018. Man, what a journey it has been! With this website I hope to encourage others to get the most out of their K40 machines as well, because I know there are a lot of them out there! If you consider doing this conversion project yourself, please read the FAQ section first to get up to speed and see if this is up your alley.
I documented the whole process of designing and building the LAYZOR on my blog (for those who are into that kind of thing ;-)).
Important notice: I have decided to stop making/selling the custom part sets because interest has been in decline for the last couple of months. I have actively supported this project for over 3 years, so it’s about time for me to take on new challenges. That being said, I’m not abandoning this project entirely. I will still sell the conversion plans for those that are interested, and keep answering any questions I receive. If you are interested in those plans, please use this contact form.
I want to thank everyone for their trust and support!
Frederico
