Introducing: the LAYZOR

LAYZOR is a budget friendly rebuild of the popular Chinese K40 laser cutter that is so ubiquitous on eBay.

While the K40 is – value-for-money – not a bad deal, there’s obviously tons of room for improvement. Being very limited in working area, user convenience and safety features, the usual upgrades still felt lacking to me, so I bit the bullet and imagined a complete rebuild. Re-using as many stock parts as possible while upgrading the ones that did need replacing. I settled on a  generous 600 x 400 mm size for the working area, and worked out my additional project goals from there. All while keeping the total conversion cost down to an absolute minimum (+/- €500).

I started designing the LAYZOR in January 2018. Dozens of hours and equally as many revisions later I finally finished the build by the end of May 2018. Man, what a journey it has been! With this website I hope to encourage others to get the most out of their K40 machines as well, because I know there are a lot of them out there! If you consider doing this conversion project yourself, please read the FAQ section first to get up to speed and see if this is up your alley.

I documented the whole process of designing and building the LAYZOR on my blog (for those who are into that kind of thing ;-)), but the story doesn’t end here. Additional modular upgrades are on the way, so check back from time to time to see what else I got in store.

Update November 2018: Custom part kits are now available! Please visit my shop.

This page is an ongoing work in progress, so if you happen to find any errors or inaccuracies, don’t hesitate me to let me know. Anyway, thanks for visiting!
